Recently I have become increasingly aware of how amazing, brilliant, and beautiful women abandon themselves without realizing that they are, in fact, abandoning themselves the way they currently are. So many of us live in a world of potential; thinking that because we plan to change ourselves, we don’t have to love who we are today!

If you ask me, this is backward thinking.

You have to love who you are today to become someone who you will authentically desire to be tomorrow.

First of all, start small. Go to the pool with friends who you feel good around. Go to the beach or pool with your sister or closest friend. Once you’re there, laugh a lot, and focus on having as much fun as humanly possible. Last summer, I bought a ridiculous neon bathing suit, got crazy fake nails with really expensive nail art, and blasted my favorite hip hop songs at my uncle’s pool with my closest girlfriend until we got in trouble with the neighbors. Growing up white in Apartheid South Africa in the 50′s and 60′s, my exposure to African culture was through my maid and I was lucky enough to be introduced to the beautiful music and rhythms which are integral to African culture. Music was blaring from her radio all day and this instilled in me a love for the rhythm and beats of African music. I became an avid lover of music, in particular world music, and music and rhythm became an essential part of my life. In the upcoming week, I am going to be in a very uncomfortable yet comfortable and familiar situation. Have you ever experienced a situation like this? Feelings of anxiety and nervousness start to creep into your body and your mind can snowball into thoughts of fear and doubt. Whatever situation you are in you can perceive it as either good or bad, right or wrong, comfortable or uncomfortable ~ ultimately it is your choice on how you want to perceive the situation.

I have learned that every situation that we encounter is a chance for us to learn, grow and love. Over the past week I have been using the following 4 tips in order to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in my current situation.
