Do-It-Yourself Exfoliation
Editors Note: This is an entirely different way to uncover the true you! Take some time one day this week and wake up 15 minutes earlier than usual. Take a long shower and be present to how you feel as you nourish your skin and remove the old energy that it holds. This is one simple and enjoyable way to bring happiness to your day and you will be sure to feel the benefits inside and out. ~Nitika~
Stripping off layers of clothing as the weather turns warmer makes us realize how pasty, pale, dry, dull and, well, wintry, our skin is from the cold months. While a bit of sunshine will certainly help with the pale problem, to revive our skin and get us ready to show off our sexy shoulders and long legs in spring’s short styles, we need to exfoliate the dead skin cells that are preventing our best skin from shining through.
The best way to wash your winter skin woes away at home is with mechanical exfoliation (versus the chemical kind that should be left to the professionals) that uses a granular scrub to not only remove the dead skin cells, but also increase circulation for soft, youthful, glowing skin.
While pumice stones, loofahs, brushes, microdermabrasion kits, microfiber cloths and adhesive exfoliation sheets all do the trick, there is no need to look further than your kitchen for your skincare solution. The key is to mix a moisturizing scrub and rub it from your collarbone to your toes in circular motions.
My top pick is a coffee ground scrub. Not only is it eco-friendly, since you recycle the grounds, but it also doubles as a cellulite reducing solution. If you brew coffee daily, use the cooled grounds to make a double-duty scrub that will exfoliate and reduce the appearance of cellulite at the same time. Mix your cooled grounds with coconut oil (or any other oil) and while in the bath, rub the mixture on your thighs, hips, bottom and anywhere else in circular motions. It will exfoliate dead skin, promote circulation and help reduce the appearance of those pesky dimples. (See how else coffee can perk up your skin at: http://thebeautybean.com) If coffee’s not to your liking, substitute sugar in the raw with coconut oil, instead.
If you have sensitive or reactive skin, try an oatmeal scrub. Grind oats in the blender until the oats are the consistency of coarse sand, before mixing with whole milk to form a paste. Using the same technique, rub the scrub on your body from your neck down in circular motions. The lactic acid in the milk with help loosen dead skin cells, while the oatmeal will rub them away.
Don’t fret, if you don’t have oats or coffee grinds in your home. In fact, you can mix just about any coarse kitchen product with oil (coconut oil being our favorite) for a skin smoothing scrub. Ground cheerios, nuts and crackers all do the trick, so be creative! Be sure to steer clear of any salt-based scrubs that can dehydrate your skin in the process and avoid any products you are allergic or sensitive to.
