3 Tools for Calm When You’re Feeling INSANE
As I sit at my parents dining room table sipping freshly juiced watermelon, I feel as cool as a cucumber.
Backtrack about 24 hours when I was upstairs crying while feeling like I was on the verge of a major breakdown. I was having one of those days where I felt like I was going insane. My Mind Would Not Stop. I called two girl friends to check if feeling insane was indeed normal. They confirmed my hypothesis, which was that unfortunately it was, yet fortunately I was not alone.
Thank God not all days are like yesterday. Thank God all days do not consist of thoughts of attacking someone, or throwing my computer across the room. Hey, I’m just being honest here because it is in those moments I become (or have thoughts of becoming) someone I am not and it scares me. I feel pained and stuck and like all I want to do is shut off the internal chatter. If only I could literally remove my brain for a while like an uncomfortable pair of shoes.
Yet due to physiology and the fear of literally losing our minds, God would have it so our brains are with us all the time. This can be scary and make for a long road ahead if days like my day happen to you more often then you would like.
However lucky for me (and now you) I’ve crowded quite a few tools in my toolbox. And here are three to feel calm(er) when you are feeling totally insane.
1) E.F.T ~ Emotional Freedom Technique or often referred to as tapping. Google it and thousands of links will come up. You can watch videos on YouTube or read about it online where you will be give a step by step guide to this amazing process. EFT has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, and help with a variety of health and psychological issues. Here’s an example:
While tapping between your eyebrows with your middle and pointer finger, say aloud
“Even though I want to rip my computer off my desk and throw it across the room, I love and accept myself.”
Simple right? Kinda silly? Maybe. But it works wonders and believe me if you feel as insane in those moments as the rest of us, you’ll try just about anything
2) Move ~ Not necessarily even far. But move. The term “I am so in my head” has passed all our lips one too many times. And as we discussed above unfortunately or not, we cannot remove our brains. So rather then getting out of your head get out the space you are in. The physical environment change will give your mind no choice but to focus, even if only for a moment, on the shift. The move will get you more into your body giving you time to catch your breath, do some EFT or whatever next action you take. Stay away from the insanity spot for at least 5 minutes and you will head back with a new perspective. Sounds to easy to be true? Try it anyway.
3) Phone a friend ~ The conversation in your mind is obviously doing you no good. The terror inside your head will not take a break until you make it. So call a friend. Share with them what’s going on, or even better, ask them how they are doing (an old but very successful AA trick). Once again taking a physical action to get out of your mind and back into your life will help immensely. Make sure to call a friend that is supportive, loving and has the same sort of mind set on these types of issues as you, we don’t need anyone fueling your fire.
Keep this article handy for the next time your computer freezes, boss acts like an ass or your man forgets to call. Feeling insane, although I may have been playful in this article can really be detrimental to your health and life. While our thoughts and emotions may sometimes get the best of us use these three tools with the intention to not send that nasty email or say that mean thing. The results will astonish you.
