Little Ustaads: Changing Little Lives

Editors Note: Bella Life is excited to include more moms in our content and this weeks Top Pick is a great example of that. Thinking outside the box and adding COLOR isn’t just for us as we get older, it starts from the very first breathe.  With this enriching class for children and the adults in their lives the ability to live vibrantly through a musical exploration is contagious.  Is there someone out there you think could benefit from a little musical culture?  If so, take the time to do something for someone that isn’t expecting it and get them a package of these classes! ~Nitika~

Growing up in a home where my parents were constantly trying to balance their new western surroundings with the traditions of their South East Asian homeland, their wasn’t always an understanding of how to have the two worlds exist with harmony and ease.  Whether they realize it or not, this weeks Top Pick has embarked on a journey that allows for tremendous change with these past conversations in addition to bringing the beautiful culture of India to unexpected parts of the world.  After years of success in Mumbai, India with over 200 children participating in their classes, Little Ustaads is taking their music to Manhattan, New Jersey, and beyond!

Co-founded by the mother of two twin boys, Kavita Bafana began training in Indian Classical dance (known as Kathak) at the young age of 6 years old.  Throughout the years she has performed in many venues such as Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, and the Nehru Center in Mumbai.  As she grew as a performer of dance and as a mother, her understanding of the importance that all musical outlets have, grew as well.  Working along with Kavita is her business partner Rachna Chandaria-Mamania who was born and raised in London and has been surrounded by all things musical for as long as she can remember.  Rachna’s ability to play an incredible variety of instruments such as the piano, the saxaphone, the flute, and the drums as well as her passion for composing music, has allowed her to connect with the children of Little Ustaads effortlessly.

The classes themselves are designed for children between the ages of 6 months – 5 years old and are a great experience for the adults that accompany the kids as well.  Through playful puppets, vibrant visuals and rhythmic sounds, children will be exposed to sounds/music/language and visuals that they never would otherwise experience. Little Ustaads is a packed 45 min session of Indian culture, values, Hindi language, arts and FUN! Each class rotation consists of a 10 week session which meets once a week for 45 minutes, and the cost is only $250 for all ten weeks.  So whether you are Indian, chineese, British, or anything in between you will be sure to learn something new about a very COLORFUL and vibrant part of the world, and have a blast at the same time!

Loving this Nitika! One way we can experience color is through culture especially when that culture is right around the corner. I love that you have brought this to light and that kids can engage in it as well. Great job!
