Mommy On Demand
Editors Note: I couldn’t be more excited that we are starting a whole new conversation on Bella Life. After recently meeting Cynthia Litman at an event, I realized that there is a major need for mothers to make a conscious effort to make their lives more colorful! Moms are constantly worrying about the color in everyone else’s life, but what about them? Well have no fear, we are going to make sure the world is a colorful place for moms AND their families! ~Nitika~
Whether you are a young, middle or elder aged woman, when motherhood comes, it is a miracle and challenge rolled into one.
With your newborn’s arrival, your mommy switch is forever turned on. There is little, if any, transition time between the birth and entering mommy mode. In fact, most moms have to actively deactivate the switch just to catch a break.
The first few months are extremely challenging to your physical, mental, social, hormonal and emotional well-being.
Embrace your new life as a mom with this mom-to-mom advice:
Don’t Be A Martyr – Delegate! What use is a mom who constantly drags her feet and cannot string together a sentence? Melissa and I both had cesarean births and learned that delegation is key. I physically couldn’t care for my babies as I envisioned. But, if I had an easy recovery I would have hogged my baby. Being forced out of the driver’s seat allowed my husband to step up and into my baby’s life. While I remained a back seat driver, I let up on the reigns.
It’s Okay to Get Away – You can leave your child and do something for yourself. I attended a women’s event where one mother of newborns felt so guilty about leaving the house without her babies. Yet, she was there and I responded, “It’s perfectly okay to be selfish. We all need our breathers.”

Mistakes Happen – My two most common phrases were I Love You and I’m Sorry. As I fumbled about, bopped ‘em and socked ‘em, I learned my babies are resilient and patient!! At one point I looked at my baby and said, “Hey, I’m new at this too, let’s get through it together.” I swear he understood and was completely sympathetic. Mommyhood is trial by fire.
Baby Talk – You will learn the magical language of your baby’s cries, pattern and what they signal. Mom’s have passed on a magic checklist to answer “WHY IS MY BABY CRYING?” which is Hungry, Tired, Hot, Cold, Wet, Gassy, Pain (itchy, cut, hot water). Check off the list until the mystery is revealed. Soon you’ll be bilingual! Here’s a system that decodes the mysteries of baby language www.dunstanbaby.com
Unhappy Mommy = Unhappy Baby – With the start of any new job, you want be perfect on day one. During your pregnancy you may experience peer and unsolicited opinions. If you are doing something and it doesn’t work for you then stop. Melissa had trouble breastfeeding and she kept trying, unsuccessfully. The more she tried, the more upset and frustrated she became and hence, the more hysterical her babies were. If mommy is calm, baby is calm. Stay focused on what makes you and your baby happy despite what others think or say.

Crying is Healthy - This goes for Mother and Child. With twins, the best advice Melissa received was, “children will not get hurt from crying”. If you are feeling frustrated and on edge, let baby cry a little and go sit in another room and take a breather, cry if you must. Crying is part of your baby’s day and how they and you relieve your feelings. We are all in the same boat so let’s put the notion of being a “perfect mom” into the diaper genie where it belongs!
